Seven Kentucky Hospitals Named Among The Best In The U.S.

This annual report analyzes more than 4500 hospitals and healthcare facilities in the United States and ranks them based on an objective analysis of several factors including:

  • Survival and re-admissions rates
  • Patient experience
  • Patient safety factors
  • Quality of nursing

The report also evaluates excellence in 25 different specialties, procedures and conditions.

Nationally, the Mayo Clinic earned the No. 1 ranking hospital in the country, followed by The Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and Massachusetts General in Boston rounding out the top four facilities in the nation for adult care. The best children’s hospitals for 2017-18 are Boston Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Good news for the residents of Kentucky as seven Kentucky hospitals and healthcare facilities were recently recognized as some of the best in the country in the 2017-18 annual report.

The top seven hospitals and healthcare facilities in Kentucky listed in order of excellence are:

  1. University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital, Lexington
  2. Elizabeth Healthcare, Edgewood-Covington
  3. Baptist Health Lexington
  4. Norton Hospital, Louisville
  5. Baptist Health Louisville
  6. Jewish Hospital, Louisville
  7. Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, Owensboro

University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital in Lexington earned the award for the No. 1 hospital in the Commonwealth and received four national specialty rankings in endocrinology (37th in the nation); geriatrics (43rd); neurology and neurosurgery (44th); and cancer treatment (50th).

UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital was also recognized as “high performing” in several areas including gastroenterology and GI surgery, nephrology, orthopedics, pulmonology, urology, aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, hip and knee replacement surgery, and lung cancer surgery.

In the Louisville area, Norton Hospital replaced Baptist Hospital Louisville in the top spot, and was ranked the No. 4 hospital overall in the Commonwealth. The Norton Hospital group includes Norton Audubon, Norton Brownsboro, and Norton Women and Children’s Hospitals.

Norton was also recognized as a “high performing” facility in 6 different adult procedures or conditions including COPD, colon cancer surgery, heart failure, hip replacement surgery, knee replacement surgery, and lung cancer surgery.

Baptist Health Louisville fell to the No. 2 spot in Louisville, and the No. 5 facility overall in the state. Baptist Health Louisville received “high performing” status in the areas of COPD, colon cancer surgery, heart failure, hip replacement surgery and knee replacement surgery.

Rounding out the top 3 in Louisville is Jewish Hospital, ranked No. 6 overall statewide, which was recognized as “high performing” in the treatment of COPD, colon cancer surgery, and heart failure.
