Ford Issues Massive Recall Over Detaching Steering Wheels

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is voluntarily recalling over 1.3 million vehicles in the United States over steering wheels that can either loosen or completely detach while driving. Defective steering bolts that attach the steering wheel to the steering column can loosen over time increasing the risk of a crash.

All 2014 through 2018 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles are affected by this recall including:

Fusion S

  • Fusion SE
  • Hybrid S
  • Hybrid SE
  • Hybrid Titanium
  • Energi SE
  • Energi Titanium
  • Fusion Sport
  • Fusion Platinum
  • Fusion Hybrid Platinum
  • Fusion Energi Platinum

And

  • Lincoln MKZ Premier
  • Lincoln MKZ Hybrid Premier
  • Lincoln MKZ Black Label

Ford dealers will replace the steering wheel bolts free of charge with longer bolts with ‘more aggressive threads’ and a larger nylon patch to secure the bolts and prevent loosening over time.

Ford knows of two crashes and one injury related to loosening steering wheel bolts. Ford cautions owners about driving recalled vehicles until they’re repaired because of the risk of crash if the steering wheel loosens or detaches while driving.
