U.S. News and World Report’s recently-released 2018-2019 “Best Hospitals” annual report ranks 3 Louisville hospitals as “high performing”, while the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center was named best in the Commonwealth with 4 specialties ranked in the top 50 nationally.

33 million people in the United States will be hospital patients this year. The U.S. News and World Report ranking provides some guidance on which of the country’s facilities offer the best care overall, and which offer the best outcomes to treat particular medical conditions. U. S. News analyzed data from 4656 hospitals nationwide, mostly in-patient facilities, and reviewed survey responses from over 30,000 doctors, evaluating 16 specialties, using 4 factors: survival rates, patient safety, specialized staff, and hospital reputation.

The 5 best hospitals in the country

 The best hospitals in the country according to data review and survey findings are

  1. Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
  2. Cleveland Clinic
  3. Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
  4. Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
  5. University of Michigan Hospitals-Michigan Medicine, Ann Arbor

Best in Kentucky

Of the 120 Kentucky hospitals evaluated, 6 received a ranking by U.S. News, while one facility received national rankings in 4 specialties.

University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital earned the biggest accolades in Kentucky.

  • Ranked #1 in the Commonwealth
  • Nationally ranked in 4 specialties: Cancer, Diabetes & Endocrinology, ENT, and Orthopedics.
  • Deemed “high performing” in 5 adult specialties (Geriatrics, Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Pulmonary, and Urology) and 6 procedures/conditions (Colon cancer surgery, Heart bypass surgery, Heart failure, Hip replacement, Knee replacement, and Lung cancer surgery).

Following UK Chandler Hospital in Lexington is Baptist Health Lexington, #2 in Kentucky.

Baptist Health Lexington is not nationally ranked in any specialty, but was deemed “high performing” in 8 procedures/conditions:

Norton Children’s Hospital is ranked #1 children’s hospital in Kentucky, and is nationally ranked in pediatric diabetes and endocrinology.
