2013 marks the fourth year that a BGSB-sponsored team has participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. We are happy to announce we had our best fundraising year ever! BGSB participated in the dollar-for-dollar matching gifts program, thereby doubling our fundraising efforts, to make our 2013 donation over $5,500.
This year’s team was our largest totaling 34 walkers comprising BGSB attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants and their families and friends, and including 14 members from our paralegal Isabella Nava’s family alone!
Wonderful weather greeted the over 600 teams participating in Louisville’s Making Strides walk on Sunday, October 27th at Waterfront Park including our own Bubalo Law PLC (“BGSB”) team aptly named “How ‘Bout Them Apples.”
Breast cancer is second only to lung cancer as the primary cancer killer of women, and is the second most common type of cancer for women after skin cancer. Annual nationwide events are held in honor of those fighting breast cancer, those who have succumbed to the disease, and those working to find a cure.
BGSB pledged several years ago to be involved in the Making Strides walk as a personal mission growing out of our professional commitment. Many breast cancer sufferers were injured by dangerous and defective hormone replacement drugs, and tragically developed this disease.
This year’s walk held special significance for one BGSB employee, Patrice Branstetter, our coordination specialist, who walked in honor of former BGSB client, Paula Ballard, with whom she has developed a personal relationship. Patrice is pictured below holding a picture of Paula. Paula is battling breast cancer caused by defective hormone replacement drugs and unfortunately, Paula’s cancer has returned for the third time.
This year, BGSB fundraising efforts included donations toward the 5K walk, a raffle of donated pizza gift cards, and a chili fundraiser and bake sale. BGSB employees held a chili fundraiser and bake sale at our offices on the Friday before Sunday’s walk. Guests chose from 13 different pots of chili provided by BGSB employees and enjoyed sweet treats to finish off their meal.
Because of the generous donations from our friends and fellow building tenants, our chili and bake sale raised over $500. BGSB employees either raised or donated another $2,200+ on behalf of the Making Strides fundraiser and BGSB matched this amount, dollar for dollar to achieve the total contribution.
With this donation total, BGSB was named one of the Top 10 Fundraising teams for the Louisville 2013 cancer walk marking the third year in a row BGSB was named one of the top 10 fundraising teams.
Donations raised by the American Cancer Society at events like the 5K are used to raise awareness about breast cancer, to deliver free information and services to women to ensure breast health like yearly mammograms for women 40 and older, to provide education about overall health and early detection, and to fund research to help find a cure to this deadly disease.
We want to congratulate our team and everyone at BGSB who donated their time, talent and treasure to make this event successful. We are so encouraged by the response to our chili fundraiser and bake sale, and the enthusiasm of our team, that we pledge to keep working inside and outside the courtroom for those suffering from breast cancer. We look forward to continuing our participation in the annual Making Strides cancer walk and we support the good work of the American Cancer Society.
