Inam Shalati was named our Hidden Hero for October 2013 for the countless hours she devotes serving others in the community.
Despite her own disabilities and physical limitations including cerebral palsy and blindness, Inam donates her time each day to such worthy organizations as Radio Eye of Kentucky, Cerebral Palsy Kids’ Center, and Make A Wish Foundation. She also volunteers as an aide working with blind children enrolled in JCPS elementary schools and speaks to school groups about the challenges of living with disabilities.
Inam recently contacted us to let us know how she used her Hidden Hero award.
With her $500 award, Inam purchased a Humanware VictorReader Stratus digital audio reader. The digital audio reader reads books aloud to blind and disabled people and Inam reports she uses hers every day to “read” books, listen to audio files and enjoy her favorite country music CD’s. Her new reader is much easier to use and more efficient than the older one as she can now easily maneuver between pages and chapters, or from song to song, listening for what she needs.
We are so pleased that the digital audio reader is helping to make your life just a little bit easier, and thank you, Inam, for sharing the rest of your story and for your continued good work in the community.
