What Is C-QUR Mesh?

C-QUR ™mesh is a brand of hernia mesh produced by Atrium Medical. It is used in hernia repair and other surgeries to support surrounding tissues that may be damaged or weakened. When the mesh is implanted, it adds strength and structure to the injured area. In theory, hernia mesh such as C-QUR™ should provide patients with the abdominal wall support needed to prevent hernia recurrence.

Unlike some other mesh types, C-QUR mesh is a permanent implant. Made of polypropylene, it is a long-lasting plastic that should continue to provide support to tissue for the life of the patient. The polypropylene mesh is coated with an omega 3 fatty acid blend to keep the mesh from sticking to internal organs.

C-QUR mesh was intended to help patients heal and prevent recurrence of hernias. However, the product has significant side effects and problems that resulted in it being recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

C-QUR Mesh Side Effects

The use of C-QUR™ mesh is linked to a number of complications for hernia patients. These include:

  • When two organs stick together or mesh sticks to an organ, it’s called an adhesion. It can be a painful and dangerous condition that can cause obstructions or impair vital organs and require follow-up surgery.
  • Perforation of organs including bowels. C-QUR™ mesh may puncture organs, leading to extreme pain, bleeding, infection, impaired organ function, and even death.
  • C-QUR™ mesh and its coating have been linked to many infections. These infections can spread quickly causing sickness, pain, and damage to other organs.
  • Mesh erosion. Permanent mesh-like C-QUR™ is designed to last for the life of the patient, but it doesn’t always perform as intended. The mesh can erode tissue and break apart, sending pieces of the mesh into nearby tissue and causing severe pain and organ damage.
  • Mesh migration. Mesh may not implant properly and move away from the implantation site and cause numerous complications. The mesh may damage surrounding tissue and organs.
  • Mesh shrinkage. When the hernia mesh shrinks, it may detach from tissue and may not provide adequate support to the hernia site. This means that a hernia recurrence is more likely to occur.
  • The body may reject the implant, necessitating surgery to remove it. Rejection can also cause inflammation, pain, and swelling.

If you experience any of these symptoms after a hernia repair with C-QUR mesh, consult with your doctor, then contact a hernia mesh attorney.

FDA Warnings About C-QUR Mesh & Subsequent Recall

C-QUR has faced a number of problems since its release including warnings and recalls by the U.S. FDA.

  • In 2012, the FDA issued a warning to Atrium detailing issues with the mesh and problems with how it was manufactured. The letter notified the company that it was not resolving known concerns and problems with the product.
  • In 2013, the FDA issued a Class 2 recall of C-QUR mesh, but it did not lead to the product being removed from the market. Atrium Medical sent letters informing doctors and hospitals that the mesh’s coating could stick to the inner packaging liner when exposed to excessive humidity.
  • In 2015, the FDA requested and received a permanent injunction against Maquet Holding B.V. and its subsidiary Atrium Medical, the maker of C-QUR, for repeatedly failing to correct safety violations. The injunction prevented the manufacturer from manufacturing C-QUR mesh at its Hudson, New Hampshire plant.

However, many hospitals buy products in bulk and may still be implanting C-QUR mesh in patients. Patients who previously were implanted with C-QUR may still develop complications with the mesh for years to come.

C-QUR Mesh Lawsuits

Atrium and Maquet have been sued by numerous patients who claim that the hernia mesh caused preventable medical complications and injuries. Patients allege that there were serious problems with the design and manufacture of C-QUR mesh. They also allege that Atrium knew of the problems but did not disclose them to doctors or their patients.

The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) established multi-district litigation for Atrium C-QUR hernia mesh lawsuits in December 2016. The litigation is being overseen by the U.S.  District Court, District of New Hampshire. These lawsuits focus on design defects, manufacturing defects, and failure to disclose problems with the products. The outcome of these cases will have important effects on how claims against Atrium and their C-QUR products proceed in the future.

Lawsuits against Atrium and C-QUR are ongoing. If you’ve had C-QUR mesh implanted and you’re suffering complications, speak with a hernia mesh injury attorney at Bubalo Law PLC about the best way to move forward.
