The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs were developed by the federal government to provide monthly financial assistance to disabled individuals. If you are under age 65 and unable to work, you may qualify for these benefits.

Qualifying for Social Security Disability Programs

In order to qualify for Social Security disability benefits, you must be totally disabled, or in the words of the applicable statute, incapable of engaging in substantially gainful employment.

If there is any job that you are capable of performing and the job is available in sufficient numbers in the area in which you live, you do not qualify for Social Security disability benefits.

For most people, the medical requirements for Social Security disability payments are the same under both the SSDI and SSI programs described below.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Benefits Program

Social Security Disability Insurance benefits are available for individuals who have worked consistently in recent years, contributed earnings to Social Security, and are now disabled. The amount of money paid through SSDI is based on the applicant’s income before the injury.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Benefits Program

Supplemental Security Income pays benefits based on financial need. SSI benefits are paid to low-income individuals who are disabled. SSI does not consider the applicant?s work history as part of the qualification process.
