Toyota Recalls Over Ten Models Related to Accelerator Pedals Getting Stuck
Toyota addressed the possibility of accelerator pedals getting stuck underneath the floor mats in certain Toyota vehicles by issuing a consumer safety advisory on September 29, 2009. Toyota is also currently conducting a safety recall to address this issue. More information can be found on the Toyota Floor Mat Recall Information page. Shortly after that, in late November, Toyota announced a way to fix the accelerator pedals with a shorter pedal.
In January of 2010, Toyota announced a recall of millions of vehicles made between 2005 and 2010 to correct "sticking accelerator pedals". This second recall is a separate action, as Toyota was forced to investigate the occurence of sticking accelerator pedals on vehicles without floor mats. Toyota called these "isolated reports" of rare instances when a pedal could "mechanically stick in a partially depressed position". A mechanical defect was cited and Toyota quickly released a fix involving the replacement of a small part underneath the mechanism.
